Joel Grossbard, PhD, is a clinical psychologist providing evidence-based therapeutic and assessment services to children, adolescents, and adults. Dr. Grossbard’s therapeutic approach emphasizes the client’s values and goals in developing a treatment plan that incorporates evidence-based behavior change principles. Dr. Grossbard has assisted in trainings nationwide on in-person and technology-based interventions that address college student drinking and co-occurring mental health issues. He currently holds a Clinical Psychology Acting Instructor appointment at the University of Washington and manages a research project funded by the Department of Defense focusing on suicide attempts in Veterans. Dr. Grossbard obtained a Masters in Developmental Psychology at Tufts University and completed his doctorate at the University of Washington, residency at the Seattle VA Medical Center and a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Washington/Seattle VA Medical Center. His expertise includes cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing and motivational enhancement therapy, and acceptance/mindfulness-based approaches. Areas of specialty include:
- Adolescent and adult anxiety, depressive and adjustment disorders
- Diagnosis and treatment of alcohol and drug-related problems
- Performance-based anxiety in the context of athletics, academics, etc.
- Cognitive and academic achievement assessments
- Veteran populations with combat-related PTSD and co-occurring mental health and alcohol/drug-related problems
- Chronic pain and other medical issues, including coping with injury and illness, treatment adherence, and psychosocial comorbidities
